The giant of the African antelope
The Cape Eland is the largest of Africa's antelope and one of the most impressive animals a hunter can pursue. A mature bull can stand around 5½–6 feet at the shoulder and weigh 1,500–2,000 lbs.
Despite its enormous size, the eland is surprisingly agile and can clear obstacles of almost 9 feet. Its distinctive spiral horns, heavy dewlap and darkening forehead become more pronounced with age.
Hunting the Eland
Eland hunting is a very different experience from simply glassing and stalking an animal. We hunt them primarily by tracking.
We start early in the morning looking for fresh tracks and sign. Once we find a good set of tracks, the real hunt begins - following the trail through the bush, reading the direction and age of the tracks and trying to catch up to a constantly moving animal.
An old trophy bull is a formidable animal and can be 13 years old or more. For this reason, we recommend a medium to large-bore rifle such as a .375 H&H, loaded with a premium-quality bullet and placed accurately.
Tracking a great old eland bull through the African bush is one of the most rewarding hunting experiences Namibia has to offer.
